Connections to Personal Teaching Experiences

I completed my first placement in a grade two classroom and had the chance to engage my students in drama a few times throughout my placement. I learned in my placement that children can be more engaged in an activity when you incorporate drama. I loved incorporating my language units into the drama curriculum. I used the pop-up airy technique during my block with my grade two students. Pop-up story is a drama technique that has students creating the pictures of a story book using their body.

I used a story book called A Sled Dog for Moshi that was a book we were working with in our Social Studies unit. As a class we were learning about communities and our focus during this class was the Arctic community. I would read a page of the book and have groups of students recreate the picture they created in their mind based on what I read to them using tableau. As we went around and presented our tableau scenes the students would explain their scene set up based on what they heard from the story book. This would help students connect to the story we were reading and understand the topic of Arctic communities. After we would read the page again and show the picture to the class so they could see if their prediction of what the picture would look like was correct. Overall, the students loved this activity and it is a good way to incorporate drama, language and social studies into one period of the day.

I have learned throughout my experiences that drama does not have to be scary and can be fun for you and your students. I have thoroughly enjoyed engaging in drama with my students and know that you will too. I hope you use some of the strategies and theories i have mentioned to guide your drama experiences with your students.
